Tom Catherall, master chef and founder of the now defunct Here To Serve restaurant group, took to the social media airwaves immediately after eating one. The owner of the restaurant that sells this beauty, Bill Brown, has a twinkle in his eye every time he talks about it.
What’s causing all the fuss?
The new hamburger at There Brookhaven (305 Brookhaven Avenue, Suite 1200 Tel: 404.949.9677) is the culprit. Its creator is the popular gastropub’s new chef, Ryan Goss, who managed to one-up the previous There Burger, which was pretty darn good in its own right.
What makes this burger so good?
Well, it is a handsome thick hand-forged patty for starters, cooked on a real grill over real fire, so it drips in its own juices. Not one of those credit card thin stacked versions you’ll find all over town, burned beyond recognition on an overzealous griddle, and dripping in something elses fat.
No need to call out the offenders here, you know who you are.
Goss grinds the beef daily. The burger’s toppings are purposefully curated from a runny cheese sauce that adds a fun messy, creamy texture to a sweet caramelized onion jam that hits with a somewhat sizable sweet note, maybe a little too much, but manages to play well off the earthiness of the patty and salty strips of bacon better than one would believe.
Even the bun is carefully calculated. In fact, it is a hot dog bun specially made for Goss in the shape of a hamburger bun. The result is a surprisingly perfect chew.
Who knew?
But the question posed is whether or not this burger is the “best burger” in Atlanta. And, I honestly don’t know. ‘Best’ will always be subjective in my opinion, so I suppose that debate and discussion will forever rage.
But I do know one thing, this burger should, at the very least, be in the discussion.
